On the weekend of January 26, 2024, Troop 46 did winter camping at Blackwell Forest Preserve. The campground was nice with all the trees and a blanket of snow. The temperatures were above normal, and the snow was beginning to melt. We did our best to remove snow from under and around our tent openings.

We built fires to keep ourselves warm due to the cold and wet. We also used the open fires for cooking. This was a challenging campout, and we all learned a lot. The warm weather quickly melted the snow and created a lot of mud. Keeping tents and our equipment clean and dry was not easy. I proud that nearly every member of our troop stayed through the weekend. It was definitely a camping trip to remember.

We took a hike up Mount Hoy at Blackwell. It’s about a gain of 180 feet. We had a great view of the surrounding Warrenville area. It was a great hike and a good opportunity to get away from our muddy campsite.

Sunday, January 24 of 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn, Troop 46 shoveled snow out of the church courtyard. Nearly 20 of us turned out to help. Everyone worked hard and we had a good time. We kept warm and for our hard work we got pizza. We enjoyed doing a favor for the First Presbyterian Church.

For our December 2023 outing, Troop 46 spent the night on the USS Cobia which is stationed at the Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He USS Cobia battled in World War II and served in the Pacific. During her service, she sank 13 Japanese vessels. We toured the ship and slept onboard the first night. On the second night of the outing we stayed in a cabin and watched the movie Hunt for Red October which was about a Soviet submarine crew trying to defect to the US in a silent submarine. We also had time for games and rank advancements.

We all got to take turns going into the torpedo tubes. We would climb up, slide in, and then the tour guide would shut the door. Once the door closed, it was perfectly silent and totally dark.

Our tour guide gave us the opportunity to visit the control room and learn how to use the controls. We each took turns at each station.

After spending the night on the ship, we had a chance to tour the submarine topside and tour the museum. The maritime museum has all types of ships, and many were made in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It was a mild day for December and we were able to spend quite a bit of time checking out the guns on the ship.

The next day we worked on rank advancements and played fox and the hound. We built a campfire and whittled sticks for cooking hotdogs over the open fire. We fixed our dogs with all the trimmings and tater tots. It was a perfect lunch for a perfect afternoon. The weather was amazing.

A big thank you to all the adults who cooked. A special thanks to the Scarpellis' and Ciskes' for their leadership in preparing the food. For dinner we had smoked pork shoulder, smoked turkey, mashed smoked sweet potatoes, scalloped potatoes, corn pudding, stuffing, salads and many desserts brought by the guests.

After dinner we all walked down to the fire bowl. We began with skits. Each patrol presented the skit they practiced earlier in the day. We got a lot of chuckles. When the skits were over, the Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) led us in a ceremony to begin retiring the colors (flags). The ceremony concludes with us burning the colors (torn stripes and stars) we prepared earlier that day.

On the weekend of October 13-15, Troop 46 had a Dark Sky Campout at the Kickapoo State Recreation Area in Oakwood, IL. The weather was forecasted to be very rainy. We were concerned that the rain would ruin our chance to see the stars. We selected the weekend because it was in the middle of the Orionids meteor shower, there was no moon, and there was a solar eclipse. It was important to time this with no moon for the brightest viewing of the stars.

We picked a good, safe spot to setup our tents. There were a lot of beautiful fall colors, and the grounds had a lot of open space. There was a nice, easy-access trail to enter the woods where we built shelters.

We arrived at the campgrounds at 8:30 PM and setup in light rain. The forecast called for a chance of clear skies between 2 AM and 4 AM. We set alarms to wake up at 2 AM. When we got up the stars were bright and incredible. The troop spotted 7 meteors and viewed the stars for about an hour before going back to our tents. We slept in until 7 AM, rather than our typical morning start at 6 AM.

The next morning, we setup rain flies so we could keep dry during our meals and skill reviews. The weather was cool and somewhat rainy. It was perfect for setting up rain flies, playing in the woods, and building structures using branches and lashing. We got a lot of practice in on lashings, especially on bowline knots and taut line knots.

The forest was filled with vines and lots of great building materials for temporary structures. Our troop built two structures. One was a lean-to and another used poles and lashings. For the lean-to, we peeled bark from fallen trees to create shingles for our structure.

The patrols had a good time practicing outdoor meal preparation. Some lessons were learned, and some good food was prepared. Not every meal was perfect, but we are making progress.

This is a good example of how our campsites appear. A chuck box and stove from one of the patrols is on the right. On the left is the KP table where we clean up after meals according to the KP method. Our tents are situated on high ground safely away from dead trees or loose limbs, and we are close enough to the out houses…but not too close if you know what I mean.

During the summer of 2022, Troop 46 returned to Camp Blackhawk. We like this camp because it has a great waterfront. We really like swimming in the lake, sailing, the iceberg, all the canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and for the older scouts, water skiing, running power boats and tubing. We also eat in a cool dining hall. They have a great 1

year program, tons of merit badges for scouts in the middle and for older scouts they offer the motor boats, ATV’s, and other adventures which are really cool.

Arriving at camp and checking out the all-important bulletin boards. Once we get there the SM sets up the troop board. This helps us know were we need to be all week, as well as duty rosters and waiter schedules for the dinning hall.

The dads. None of this happens without support from the parents. We welcome the parents, they drink coffee and shuttle us to the off-site merit badges, like welding, horsemanship, mt biking, climbing.

What’s cool about Camp Blackhawk, Owasippe is that there is something for everyone, even the older scouts. Here are three SPL’s, three Eagle candidates, all from the same Cub Scout Pack having a great time.

Prior to Summer camp we like to have a campout to help first year scout get ready. The older scouts work advancement with the younger Scouts and then we have a cooking competition between the patrols. The meals are outstanding. This year we attended Rock Cut State Park

Pancakes anyone? On April 23, 2022, Troop 46 resumed having our annual pancake breakfast. This year, we need to relocate the event to the Wheaton VFW. We had hundreds of meals served and the troop got back into the habit and raising some fund to underwrite our campouts

February was Troop 46's Annual Planning campout. It was held at Rainbow Scout Reservation in Morris, IL.

Each scout is encouraged to make a presentation of at least one idea for a monthly camp out. This year there were 21 ideas presented to the Troop. After all presentations were made, each scout voted for their top 3 ideas. The ideas with the most votes form the basis for the next years activities.

On February 5, Troop 46 participated in their Council’s Klondike Derby. Klondike is a one-day winter competition of Scout demonstrating their Scouting skills. Last year Troop 46 had one of their best finishes ever (3rd place) and have been looking to have another good showing this year.

It’s always good to have parent participation. Without them, Klondike wound not have happened.

For the January campout, Troop 46 went luging! The Troop traveled to Gerber Scout Reservation near Owasippe Scout Reservation near Muskegon, Michigan and stayed at the Earle Johnson Lodge.

On Saturday morning, it was cold, but the Troop was able to get things started with breakfast. Mr Le and Mr Scarpelli get started on breakfast for the adults.

The Wolf patrol left some things outside out too long, now they are making breakfast with frozen batter.

The Panther and beaver patrols cooked their breakfast also.

On Saturday, some of the Scouts wanted to test out a few sleds before lunch.

The hill they used to sled down was steep. Coming back up the hill was not so easy.

Afterwards, the Troop tried their hand at snow shoeing on the frozen lake near Gerber.

Later on the Troop headed to the Luge track, where they go over the basics of the luge sled.

After getting the hang of the luge sled, the Troop heads to track and lines up to do the luge run.

While at the track, there were a few races lined up to see who can get the best time going down the track. Troop 46 was determined to get the best times.

Afterwards, they were finished and ready to go back home, so they circled up outside and went around to say what everyone liked and disliked about the campout, and started the drive back to Glen Ellyn.

In October, we launched rockets at the Richard Bong State Recreation Area in Wisconsin. There was an organization there that is dedicated to launching high power rockets and we did it with them. Some of the members had huge rockets. We waited until they left to do our own thing with our experimental rockets that some of us created.

September Campout - Warren Dunes

           Warren Dunes 09-17-2021 to 09-19-2021

For the September campout, Troop 46 went to the Warren Dunes where they learned how to orienteer. On the night when we arrived at our campsite, we immediately started setting up our tents, conversed with each other, and went to our tents to end the day.

The next day, we all had breakfast and we got ready to go on an orientation course created by the adults. We were put into small groups and were taught how to use a compass and map so we could navigate the course.

The course contained many points of the dunes in which we had to climb and hike up to. Most scouts only got halfway through their map locations they had to go to until we decided to take a break for lunch.

Once we finished having lunch, we went split the troop into 2 groups and went on a five-mile hike around the dunes, which allowed most of the younger scouts to get their requirement signed off.

Afterwards, we came back to the campsite, got the sand out of our shoes and ended the day making patrol dinners and desserts.

On Sunday morning, we made breakfast, packed up our tents and gear, did thorns & roses, and began the long ride back to Glen Ellyn.

A majority of the Troop went to Owasippe Scout Reservation, located in Twin Lake, Michigan, from 06/26/2021 to 07/03/2021, for summer camp. The Camp staff provided food for every meal, and we dined in a large tent behind the dining hall. We setup camp at Camp Blackhawk, were we had to share an outhouse with a few other campsites.

Unfortunately, there was an infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars at camp. They were everywhere, eating all the leaves from the trees.

On 6/27 we had our swim test and orientation of camp. Breakfast was dry foods, hamburgers for lunch, and a lasagna for dinner at the dining hall. Fire bowl was in the evening with skits performed by camp staff.

On 6/28, we had a modest eggs, sausage, and hash browns for breakfast, soft shell tacos for lunch, and gyros with sweet potato fries for dinner. We began work on our Merit Badges as our week of summer camp began. The adult leaders entered a cooking competition that had to have an orange or orange flavoring in the food. Mr Scarpelli entered the contest representing Troop 46 with a chicken-onion-orange zest meal made in Dutch oven. Unfortunately, Mr Scarpelli’s delicious meal did not win. (Booooo)

One event was a scoutmaster belly flop competition that Mr. Boyd dressed up as a pirate named Greybeard. Unfortunately, we did not win that contest, but all participants had fun.

On 6/29 we had French toast and bacon for breakfast, hot dogs and fries for lunch, and turkey “coins” and potatoes for dinner. We continued working on Merit Badges. Troop 46 wins the Dixie cup boiling water contest.

Although we won the balloon toss competition, we found out that our score for the Camp Cup shifted by one point, which put us in second place.
